RUN IN THE SUN: KICK START YOUR NEW YEAR FITNESS REGIME WITH A
SPORTING CHALLENGE IN CYPRUS

  • Places still available for the Limassol Marina and Sunshine Cup
  • Sign up for new fitness challenge ‘Legion Run’, launching 29 March
  • Win a holiday for two to Cyprus every week for 50 weeks

Considering taking on a fitness challenge for the New Year, but can’t face the UK’s grey skies or the thought of pounding 26 miles of London pavement?

With average maximum daily temperatures in February (the island’s coldest month) of 18°C, 340 days of sunshine a year and a Brit-friendly infrastructure, it’s no wonder that Cyprus has long been a favourite winter training ground for athletes, with members of both the British Olympic and Paralympic teams basing themselves on the island pre London 2012.

For those of us who aren’t yet members of Team GB, Cyprus hosts a number of international-standard sporting challenges which are open to professionals and amateurs alike. And when you’ve successfully cycled for five days through the Troodos or completed a marathon round Limassol’s Old Town, visitors can treat themselves to a stay in one of the island’s boutique rural retreats or beachfront hotels, a serving or two of delicious mezze, a round of golf – or even a professional sports massage in one of the island’s unique spas.

Setting the pace at the beginning of the year is the K1 Triathalon Club’s Duathlon Super Sprint and Sprint (26 January; www.k1triathlonclub.org), which takes the form of a running leg, followed by a cycling leg and then another running session in a format similar to a Triathlon. Hot on the Sprint participants’ heels come the entrants for the Sunshine Cup (27 February – 2 March and 9 March; www.cyclingcy.com), a  unique and challenging two-stage cycling experience that takes in some of the toughest terrain – and most beautiful scenery – Cyprus has to offer.

Rounding off the spring season, along with a number of other smaller races, are the island’s two major marathon challenges, the Cyprus Marathon (9 March; www.cyprusmarathon.com) and the Limassol Marathon (16 March; www.limassolmarathon.com). Set in and around Paphos, on Cyprus’ West Coast, the Cyprus Marathon incorporates three different distances; the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Road Race, while the Limassol Marathon, which is the island’s official marathon and takes place around the major town in the centre of the island’s South coast, including along the area’s famous beaches, features a Marathon, Half Marathon, Health Race, Corporate Race and a Children / Student Race.

Finally, if you want sporting challenge to be more challenge than sport, you could consider signing up for Legion Run, a brand new event featuring obstacles including fire, barbed wire and walls, which launches in Cyprus in March (29 March; www.legionrun.com)

(For a full list of sporting challenges, including swimming, running, skiing, horse riding, taking place in Cyprus throughout the year visit www.visitcyprus.com or www.sporteventscyprus.com).

WIN A HOLIDAY IN CYPRUS EVERY WEEK FOR 50 WEEKS!
To emphasise the fact that Cyprus is the warmest island in the Mediterranean (with the cleanest beaches in Europe), Cyprus’ two main Hotel Associations, in conjunction with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, launched ‘The Biggest Holiday Competition in the World’ at World Travel Market 2013, offering sun-starved Brits the chance to win a stay on the island every week for 50 weeks (until October 2014).

Highlighting the quality of the island’s accommodation, four- and five-star properties located across Cyprus will be taking part in the competition, which offers a seven-night stay for two people in a sea-view room, including breakfast. (Prize does not include flights). All holidays offered are subject to availability of rooms in participating hotels.

To enter, wannabe holiday-makers should visit www.summeriscyprus.com, follow the links to the competition’s Facebook page and then simply guess which of the three hotels listed is the one pictured for that week. The winning entry will be picked at random once a week, for 50 weeks.
